Mark, and now — via Mark’s website — I, have become fixated on a straight, 24-year-old, artJew named Sam Stern, who has been using his personal website, JewishCheerleaders.com, to chronicle his attempts to revolutionize the smut business in Southern California by bringing some intelligence, wit, and artistry to pornography.

On the one hand, I’m pretty sure he’ll fail at transforming the porn industry as we know it. My old high school friend David Kinnick took a shot at doing the same thing and instead ‘the biz’ nearly ground him into the dust. He still hasn’t fully recovered, I don’t think.

On the other hand, this guy Sam sure has spirit. He’s incredibly honest and introspective in his online journals. His stuff is, in fact, very witty and intelligent. Even if he doesn’t change porn as we know it, there’s no question he’s in the process of changing himself — and for the better, I think. He’s on a journey, and I’m fascinated to take it with him.

He wants to be a filmmaker — porn is just his chosen medium at the moment because that’s how he thinks he can get an audience. But what I’d really like to see him try is a narrative film about his adventures as porn naif/raconteur. I think it would be an incredibly compelling tale. It certainly has three solid acts, and some fascinating themes: he’s taken the perennial debate about how much must an artist prostitute himself and literalized it. Then there’s the very interesting question of just-how-gay-is-Sam-anyway? He says he’s “basically straight.” But the kind of straight that “sets off people’s gaydar.” His female friends tell him he ought to explore his “feminine [read: gay] side.” I really have no idea, and I don’t think Sam himself does either. He certainly shows some anxiety about having ‘latent homosexual’ tendencies. I don’t think he’s actually gay, but he’s more ‘bent’ than straight. “Polymorphously perverse,” as my father often used to say, perhaps.

Moreover, all these themes in Sam’s story intersect very nicely around the way people are forced to label themselves and fit themselves into categories which may or may not be natural for them. Are you an artist or a pornographer? Are you gay or straight? I sense that even Sam wants to fit neatly into a box — he seems to have kind a stubborn and categorical personality. But he just can’t. It’s so freakin’ fascinating, I’m really obsessed. Can’t you tell?

So I ordered off Sam’s website all the gay/semi-gay porno films that he has so far produced, even though I’m waaay too broke to make such a purchase, and have only purchased one pornographic video before, ever. But hey, they’re three for 20 bucks, and ya gotta support the poor, Jewish art-boy living in poverty on the fringes of Hollywood, right?

Check out his site. You might get hooked, too.

I have a new obsession, and I have MarkAllenCam to blame.
