I’m sorry you felt ill-served, but it was a (fairly mild) heartfelt remark in a journal entry, albeit publicly viewable. I’m glad you saw it.Naturally, however, I understand that someone whose career depends upon blowing large amounts of smoke would want total control of his message, and brook no public criticism whatsoever. So I’ve removed both references to you on my site, and none will appear ever again.

By the way, the “you’ll-never-do-lunch-in-this-town-again” threat was particularly melodramatic, silly, and unnecessary. Very ‘you,’ in other words. A simple ‘please’ would have sufficed.

In that vein, as to you never recommending me again: I should be so lucky.

TAC

The next day, John wrote back:

Whatever you think I did to you, I certainly didn’t deserve any of what you’ve said about me in either your website or in the last email. I’m sorry you feel so bitter about our experience producing Fire Island. You did teach me a lot. For that I am grateful. And, by the way, I did email you two or three times in the last 2 years. You never answered. To call me an SOB and say I didn’t have the nerve to inform you about Gay Riviera is a lie. I emailed you about it, and asked if you’d produce the Miami end of it. I never heard from you.

I have said nice things about you, Tim, despite your flaws. We all have flaws. I have overlooked them, and have always stood up for you and told people that despite your strong personality, you’re a good producer.

I never harbored any animosity toward you the way you have toward me.

I think whatever hate you have toward me is misplaced.

JC

Oops. Here’s how I immediately responded:

Wow!This is clearly a case of a technology-caused misunderstanding spiraling out of control. I am *so* sorry about what I wrote in my last e-mail, and about what I said in my journal entry.

It all started when I discovered online that “Gay Riviera” was shortly to air. I was pretty annoyed that I had never heard from you about it. After what we’d gone through together on “Fire Island,” and considering the extent to which “Gay Riviera” was its direct descendant, I thought I at least deserved the courtesy of a call advising that “Riviera” was going into production — whether or not there was a spot for me on the project.

I guess I was more annoyed than I realized, because although I intended the words in the journal to have a snippy-playful tone, in hindsight they did not. And I guess that’s because my hurt vented subconsciously in a meaner-sounding way than I intended or appreciated.

This is absolutely the first time I was in any way aware that you tried contacting me previously about “Gay Riviera.” (I accept that you did; it’s easy for e-mail to get garbled, misrouted, etc. No doubt, you used my way-old gate.net address. Michael/Marty have always had my current address, but there’s no reason you would have thought to get it through them.)

Clearly, you were pissed reading my journal entry — and, however I intended it, I don’t really blame you. You lashed out, I lashed back — and here we are.

It never occurred to me that you might have attempted but failed to reach me during the run-up to production on “Gay Riviera.” Everything that followed flowed from that misapprehension. Again, please accept my apologies.

Yours,

TAC

His response ended the exchange:

Apology accepted. And I really could have used you in Miami, Tim. It’s a miracle I didn’t have a nervous breakdown. I’ll tell you all the lurid details of working with really sleezy producers on this project … perhaps over a pitcher of Mai Tai’s if you make it to New York some day.

Thank you for retracting your words. I feel much better now.

JC

My life is such a crazy roller coaster right now.
